FRESHWATER HOT SPOTS
Trout: The best action in Southern California has been at Big Bear Lake with limits of holdover rainbows to three pounds or better pretty common for trollers and shore anglers. Quite a few fish over five pounds thanks to plants for the two recent derbies. Gregory and Green Valley Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains are both being stocked regularly and the bites at both is improving. Jenks Lake is fair to good after its third plant of the season last week, and Lake Hemet is also pretty fair. The trout bite in urban waters is pretty much over for the season. But there is still a fair bite for holdover troll fish at Cachuma, Casitas, and Silverwood. Silverwood is probably the best of the three. Pyramid was planted this week. The bite also remains very good at Cuyamaca. Trout action in the Sierra Nevada remains just fair overall, but there are some bright spots. The hot pick remains Bridgeport Reservoir with limits of rainbows and browns to four pounds, but there is limit-style fishing on some days in Silver Lake, Convict Lake, and the South Fork of Bishop Creek. For fly anglers, the East Walker, Hot Creek, and Crowley remain good bets.
Black Bass: The bass action is coming back on with most fish out of their post-spawn funks and feeding pretty actively. While fish are showing on plastics fished on structure most places, there is improving action on reaction baits, with spinnerbaits, cranks, and swimbaits at good option, too. Top bets are still Diamond Valley, Sutherland, Otay, El Capitan, Skinner, Casitas, Castaic, Piru, and Silverwood. In fact, upper Otay cranked out a 15-pound bass on Wednesday this week. On the Central Coast, Santa Margarita, Nacimiento, San Antonio, and Lopez are all still good for bass. On the Colorado River, the Lake Havasu and Topoc Gorge bites have been very good and the whole lower river is very good, too.
Striped Bass: There is an excellent striper bite at the California aqueduct near Taft with most anglers getting two-fish limits of fish from four to five pounds, with some to 12 pounds or better. The Colorado River bite is also breaking open in several places. The upper end of Havasu and Topoc Gorge are producing a lot of fish to two to six pounds with some bigger fish. The fish are congregating and starting to move up river to spawn. The Willow Beach bite turned on two weeks ago with some real quality fish over 20 pounds on trout-like swimbaits. Most of the SoCal striper lakes remain just fair.

Our neighbor, Jerry Yourczek, had an old Shaver post pounder that hooks to a 3 point and is run by hydraulics laying out in his yard. I ask him if it worked and if we could borrow it. (I knew he hadn’t moved it in seven years.) He said it did and we were welcome to use it. Will and David brought it home. The hoses were shot, but we were able to borrow hoses from our wood splitter. Will hooked it up and started pounding posts, starting at the corner of our horse pasture, angling up close to our driveway. We didn’t want stock running on our best blueberry patch or the young pines on that ridge! After 5 posts, the seal on the hydraulic cylinder blew. Will spent the day pulling it apart and digging out the old seal. It was brittle and hard. Luckily, he was able to go online and find a dealer. On pulling the cylinder apart, he also found a gear-shaped spacer that was worn out. One phone call later, he had the parts coming.
Three days later, the parts arrived and Will put it all back together. So now, he’s busy pounding posts, having gone all the way from our horse pasture, putting in a gate up near the big pines where our driveway makes a 90 degree turn, and is heading along the drive. He’ll be glad to get off the ridge as there are LOTS of big rocks up there, left by the glacier. The posts don’t always go in straight, but they’re definitely solid!
Yesterday we took a ride around the 40 with our four wheeler. Wow, is there ever grass on that piece of ground! We are so happy to have bought that land. Not only is it great pasture for our animals, but it’s pretty, too! Soon there’ll be no more buying hay in the summer for us. — Jackie
