Shatel: Badgers aside, NU has its own issues

Advantage, Bucky? We’ll see. The addition of Russell Wilson, the senior playmaking quarterback, will probably put Wisconsin into the favorite role in the Big Ten race. Because of Ohio State’s nightmare summer. Because nobody knows what to expect out of Nebraska. Because Wilson is that good. And because of the dimension he gives an already stout Badgers run game.

But this doesn’t change Nebraska’s to-do list. To compete for a Big Ten title, the Huskers still have to have a healthy and capable Taylor Martinez. They need a wiser, and better, T-Magic at quarterback. And if the Big Red needs to match anything with Wisconsin, it’s at the offensive line. The Huskers need to reach the Badgers’ standard at o-line. And the Huskers haven’t been there since 1999. If NU can get that Martinez, and that o-line, then Nebraska-Wisconsin will play twice. And they’ll be epic games.

• History happens here, and that includes at Werner Park this week. For the first time in forever, an Omaha Class AAA team played a home game during the College World Series. The Storm Chasers drew more than 8,000 on Saturday night and followed up with 6,900 for Monday’s doubleheader. The out-of-towner effect? Not necessarily. Martie Cordaro and Co. worked the Little League tourney teams hard, sure. But when asked what percentage of his crowds were CWS visitors, Cordaro said, “Five percent."

• Spoke with a couple of vendors outside the CWS. And the refrain was clear: There are too many vendors, merchandise or food, and too many corporate tents for everyone to survive. This year’s CWS, with the sprawling land of opportunity for blocks, was like the Oklahoma land rush. Everyone wanted in, everyone wanted a piece of the pie. But there has been too much. Meanwhile, the restaurants in the Old Market, and the vendors serving eats around the stadium, are hurting because of the abundance of corporate tents, where fans eat and drink for free with the right ticket. There may not be half the vendors or tents next year. Competition will weed out the weak. They’ll have to find a balance.

• Dennis Poppe said he wouldn’t do anything differently during last Monday night’s weather delay. The NCAA’s College World Series chief said play should not have stopped when the sirens went off. Poppe said, “I’m a country boy, and I know that sirens don’t necessarily mean there’s anything there. We’re not going to start something until we know what’s coming." Meanwhile, Poppe praised the plan to put people in the Qwest Center Omaha convention center. He wondered where people could have gone if this had happened at Rosenblatt Stadium. Did it ever happen at Rosenblatt?

The meal concludes with three dessert options: Key Lime Pie, Triple-Chocolate Brownie à la Mode, or Sweet Cinnamon Doughnut Bites.
