Turn your backyard into a party venue

Sometimes you don't have to look beyond your own backyard for the best party place in town.

In this season of wedding receptions and pre-nuptial dinners, Fourth of July cookouts and neighborhood block parties, outdoors venues are in style.

"Keep it simple and enjoy it," said Deb Schulte, a Lincoln event planner. She has organized all sizes and shapes of outdoor parties with a wide range of budgets and venues. Having a party outside makes everybody think more casually, she said.

The hostess sets the tone, and that sometimes begins with the invitation. For one summer outdoor party, Schulte used a single rubber flip-flop for the invite and put it in an envelope.

"It was bright and unexpected," she said.

Small pop-up tents (no sides, just poles) offer some shade, and they are easy to put up and take down. Schulte thinks buying a few are worth the investment if you entertain outdoors a lot.

Keep the decorations minimal. Schulte used plastic tablecloths at an outdoor wedding shower, then she cut another tablecloth in strips and hung them as streamers from a tent.

"I like things bright," Schulte said.

Schulte prefers using old things in new ways for outdoor events. Right now, she has a bucket on her porch that houses an herb garden. Last season, the same bucket was filled with ice.

"Spray paint can be used to change the color pretty easily," she said.

Walk around your house and look for big containers, Schulte advises. They may not have originally been used as outdoor party accessories, but they can be repurposed.

"Lots of times you already have what you need," she said. For example, Schulte collects quilts and uses them on tables outside and on the ground for sitting on the grass.

Lincolnite Deb Arends pulled out all of the stops earlier this summer when she hosted a "beach party" for her daughter Kathleen and new husband, Gene, who were married last fall on a California beach. Arends wanted an outdoor party for 300 friends and family, so she enlisted neighbors too, and they blocked off the streets and offered up their backyards for the festivities.

If you are going to block off streets, be sure to get the proper permits from the city, as Arends did.

Arends, an interior designer, decided this was the perfect time to spruce up her yard and put some of her garage sale finds to use. Starting about one month ahead, she began getting her yard, which has lots of perennials and shrubs, in shape, including weeding in the mornings. One week before the event her friends came over and they redressed the beds with new mulch. The day before the party, more friends did last-minute yard work.
