San Bernardino has long transportation history

Planes, trains and automobiles tell the story of San Bernardino.

On the city's northeast side, runways and hangars converted to civilian use are reminders of the heyday of Norton Air Force Base, where cargo planes, a video production facility and some missile systems helped keep the peace for 52 years.

The base opened in May 1942, five years before there was a U.S. Air Force, and closed in 1994 as part of a painful Base Realignment and Closure process. At its peak, the base was used for overhauling jet engines and in 1966 was made one of six Military Airlift Command strategic bases, supporting the Army and Marine Corps.

For some fortunate Southern California veterans, Norton was their point of return from Vietnam to the continental United States when bases in Northern California were fogged in.

The runway is now part of San Bernardino International Airport, which is still being developed as a civilian airport.

The first passenger train rumbled into town in 1883 and a whole lot more were to follow.

Santa Fe played a big part in popularizing San Bernardino and, when it opened a rail yard and repair shops to fix its trains near the end of the 1880s, 4,000 jobs opened up for skilled workers, and most of them lived in town.

The operation shut down in 1992 and moved to the Midwest, just as San Bernardino was bracing for the Norton closure. But as with the air base, many former employees and their descendants stuck around.

The large Santa Fe Depot on Third Street also stayed around, has been restored, and now doubles as an Amtrak station, a small railroad museum and the headquarters of the San Bernardino Associated Governments, a regional transportation authority.

San Bernardino is also the eastern terminus of Metrolink's most heavily traveled commuter rail route, connecting hundreds of commuters a day with the Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.

The San Bernardino station is jammed with traffic, prompting officials to build a new parking garage and to begin the first test runs of express service, with only two stops between San Bernardino and LA.

Aside from the covered wagon and horseback days, folks who didn't arrive in town by plane or train got here by car.

A good many got their first glimpse of the town while rolling in on Route 66, the famed Chicago-to-Santa Monica highway that brought tourists and migrating families west for more than half a century, until the interstate highway system spelled its doom.

"Properties that are priced well, staged to show well, need minimal repair/updating, and are marketed well are selling faster. I know of a home in a popular area called Washington Park that went under contract in one day and was priced in the $500000s.

Credit Repair in California | Credit Repair Reviews Blog

Grade student government, but I’ll be damned if you can beat this weather – especially now that summer’s finally here!

There’s another reason I love living out here: it’s easier to repair my broken credit record here; thanks in large part to the Statute of Limitations.

A lot of consumers are either completely unaware of the State and/or Federal SOL and what it means for their credit repair efforts, so let’s take a moment to clear the air here.

Federal Statute

The Federal Statute of Limitations states that any and all negative credit information must come off your credit report after seven years — with the exception of bankruptcies, which stay with you for a minimum of 10 years, and any US government debts (like back taxes) you may have in your name.  All other negative accounts – including late payments, charge-offs, tax liens, and collections – can feel free to show themselves to the door.

State Statute

Here’s where credit repair in California really pays off: Each state has its very own Statute of Limitations as well.  And luckily, each state’s SOL varies, with California’s lasting 4 years on any written agreements, and only 2 years for an oral contract.

Why other states are SOL

So what about the times when there happens to be a discrepancy between the Federal and State SOLs?  In these cases, the account defers to the State’s SOL, meaning residents of states like California, Maryland, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania (among others) won’t have to wait up to 7 years for their bad accounts to fall off.

Of course, the grass isn’t entirely greener for state’s with shorter SOLs — for an example for my fellow Californians, the 4 year anniversary of your negative credit only means that your creditors can no longer legally come after you for the account you owe – the account itself could still remain on your report for the remaining 3 years, unless of course you work to have it paid off and removed yourself.

Still, not having to worry about collectors harassing you for an account is better than it remaining on your report for up to 15 years (take THAT, Ohio and Kentucky!), but if you really want those negative accounts taken care of, start working towards repairing your credit now so you can truly be debt- and worry-free.
