Mentor native Katie Spotz doesn't let a broken pelvis end her cross-country ...

Katie Spotz -- the Mentor native who last year became the youngest person to row solo across the Atlantic -- is now racing across the country on a bicycle, trying to ignore the pain from a broken pelvis.

Spotz, 24, wrecked her bike June 10 while training for The Race Across America, a grueling 24-hour-a-day cross-country bicycle chase that only 200 cyclists have completed since 1982.

X-rays showed several breaks in Spotz' pelvis and a doctor told to stay off her bike. But Spotz, who wanted to break a world record with cycling partner Sam Williams -- refused to give up.

She devised a solution both she and the doctor could accept: Enter the race on a hand-bike. Last Saturday when the race began, as the other endurance athletes pumped their legs to move off the beach at Oceanside, Calif., Spotz pumped her arms, moving hand pedals.

"The only arm exercise I've done in the last seven months has been passing the plate around at the dinner table," Spotz wrote in an online journal.

Both Spotz' Atlantic journey and the cross-country bike race go about 3,000 miles. Even without the broken bones, they are very different adventures.

For 70 days, Spotz didn't see another human on the water between Senegal, West Africa and Guyana, South America. It was just her, a few Ipods and a 19-foot row boat.

In the bike race, Spotz planned to enter with a teammate: Sam Williams, who has also rowed solo across the Atlantic. The two would alternate biking and resting in a crowded RV traveling with them.

After Spotz injury, two more teammates -- including Greater Clevelander Kevin Malone -- joined the effort.

Spotz, who could not be reached Friday, has detailed the bike race in an online journal , with photos, video and Twitter feed.

Pedaling with hands and arms is "almost like cycling with an elephant on your shoulders," Spotz wrote two days into the race.

During her first relay shift, Spotz said she could have easily kept a 20 mph pace. Instead, she was at 12 mph. And the 200 miles per day she planned to log? Forget about it.

Five miles in, she contacted her support vehicle and demanded her time-trial bike even though she knew it was foolish.

"One week ago, my idea of a challenge was a 5,000-foot climb. This week? A flight of stairs," Spotz wrote.

A couple of days later, she wrecked the hand-bike. Spotz went to another doctor. This one said her healing was going well enough for her to get back on her regular bike. Pain should be her guide on how fast and how far she traveled, the doctor said.
