Susan and Dr. John Piazza staged a black tie opera event in their Ward Hill home

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - An Evening at the Opera: Arias and Duettinos," the brainchild of Susan Piazza, came to pass because of Susan's inherent love and passion for the opera and her desire to share her enthusiasm with friends — many of whom are also devoted fans.

On the evening of June 12 Susan and Dr. John Piazza staged a black tie event in their Ward Hill home, where some 150 invited guests included Surrogate Robert J. Gigante, Manhattan Borough President, Scott Stringer, and Assemblymen Michael Cusick and Matthew Titone.

Susan explains that within her circle of friends, there remains a small percentage who have little knowledge of the opera and this was her way of introducing — and highlighting — some of her favorite operatic pieces. Susan confides that after the performances she was delighted to learn that many had a new-found appreciation for opera and now look with enthusiasm toward attending the Met.

Says Susan: "Drawing a new audience to the opera is very much encouraged, even though Peter Gelb, general manager of the Met, has done a masterful job of introducing opera to the masses." She adds she was particularly saddened to hear of the recent decision by the New York City Opera to vacate the premises at Lincoln Center; their departure is a very sad development indeed.

Susan points out that individuals should choose an opera with a story line or basic plot that appeals to their taste — and once they've selected the opera, they should listen to the music — arias and duettinos — before attending the performance in order that they become familiar with the operatic pieces. And lastly, she recommends that they adhere to the more standard dress code by wearing something formal in nature, whether it's a gown or dress — and black tie or suit and tie for the gents — all contributing to a memorable event.

Christopher Benbow, served as the master of ceremonies for the evening that included performers: American soprano Jama Jandrokovic who has charmed audiences and critics alike with her "lovely lyric soprano.
