IA lawmakers venture back to tour Siouxland flooding

It wasn't his first visit to see western Iowa flooding, and it likely won't be his last. Iowa Governor Terry Branstad toured flooded parts of Sioux City on Monday.

Branstad says he's very concerned about what the water has done and what it could do.

The tour started in Sioux City's Riverside area, just off River Drive. Branstad, along with Rep. Steve King, and other Siouxland leaders, climbed the levee to see the water of the Big Sioux River. Branstad is worried about homeowners who live along the river. Residents who've had pumps running to keep the water at bay.

"I am concerned because this situation is one that's going to go on for some considerable time. And every time we have a considerable about of rainfall like we've had locally that exacerbates the situation," said Branstad.

Branstad is also concerned about businesses. Along Sioux City's riverfront one of the hardest hit is Bev's on the River and the Hilton Garden Inn.

"We want to make sure that we're doing all we can to give them the support and help they need," said Branstad.

Branstad and King met firsthand with owner Larry Miller. He doesn't have flood insurance since the flood maps put his business well above the flood plain, and listed his risk of every being flooded at one-percent.

"I get sick. And I just think 'Oh my' and I try and figure out how we can dam it up some way to allow us to use it," said Miller.

Miller has 18 pumps running to pull water from behind the levees at the Hilton and Bev's. He's already canceled several wedding receptions and room reservations for the month of July. His biggest concern now is help. He's happy to hear Woodbury County will receive federal help, but knows the money won't pay for everything.

"They aren't going to mop my floors. They aren't going to give me money for being out of business," said Miller.

That money would only come in from the Small Business Administration.
