Sequim High School agriculture teacher Kristi Short joined with Brad “The Worm Guy” Griffith and, under the scientific advisement of Nico Eisenhauer, a University of Minnesota earthworm studies scientist, they designed an earthworm learning program for eight of Short's students.

It was a study of earthworms through interactive educational contact, typical observation science.

They built a wood frame around worm middens near the school's greenhouse and Short's classroom.

They used string to section the frame off for controlled conditions so students could diagram and track their findings over time.

The students placed objects around worm middens and experimented by placing seedlings around worm holes to see if they moved or munched on them.

“Everybody had their own little experiment,” Short recalled. “Some used colored paper, weights and strings.”

Sophomore Nick Well said he enjoyed the project.

“We planted seedlings but found they didn't eat them,” Well said, looking down at corn sprouts shooting up out from around the worm middens.

Day 2 of the experiment, Well said he and his fellow young worm scientists saw that at least one worm had moved a piece of string around.

Freshman Alexandra Souza said she was excited to know the experiment could affect the course of research.

“We're making history,” she declared.

Jacqueline Sweet, a sophomore, said Griffith helped the students look for signs of earthworm activity.

The students plan to continue their experiment next year and Short said they will take it to a Future Farmers of America conference.

“Next year, we'll be able to do it better and know what we are doing,” Sweet said.

Souza said she hoped to learn more about the worm and seedling experiment, and under more controlled conditions.

“We need more time,” she said, adding that she and the other students were excited about studying earthworms when they are out after dark.

Souza admits she was skeptical when she first met Griffith.

“When I first talked to him, I said, ‘He's crazy',” she said.

“But I listened to him and found he was interesting.
