Overcoming obstacles: Baby born with a rare birth defect thrives
Walking into the Winnebago home of Robby and Lindsay Ludwig, the first thing seen is toys. Children live here — 2-year-old, Elle and 11-month-old, Emery. This is a happy home. Toys dot the living room. Life is seemingly normal for this Midwest family. Robby works full-time, Lindsay tends to their children, working part-time. But, underneath all this normalcy is anything, but. One year ago, life seemed pretty dark for this family. The future of an unborn child hung in the balance.
Lindsay was 26 weeks pregnant when a routine ultrasound came back with alarming results. Just four weeks prior to that ultrasound, the fetus looked normal. Things changed for the worse.
“It became information overload for me — every parent’s nightmare,” Lindsay said. “They told me my baby had a rare birth defect — I was told to go home on complete bed rest.”
Lindsay returned to her home that day, looked at her mother Kim Roderick of Freeport, who was watching Elle, and broke down. Lindsay was devastated. The doctor told her the baby had a 50 percent survival rate upon birth.
Devastating News
The ultrasound showed the baby had Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH). CDH is when the wide, flat muscle that separates the chest and abdominal cavities, also known as the diaphragm does not form. The diaphragm forms when the fetus is at eight weeks gestation. When it does not form completely, a defect is created. It is a hole in the muscle between the chest and the abdomen.
The majority of CDHs occur on the left side. The hole allows the contents of the abdomen (stomach, intestine, liver, spleen and kidneys) to go up in to the fetal chest. The herniation of these abdominal organs into the chest occupies that space and prevents the lungs from growing to normal size. The growth of both lungs can be affected. This is called pulmonary hypoplasia.
While in the uterus, a fetus does not need its lungs to breathe, because the placenta performs this function. However, if the lungs are too small after the baby is born, the baby will not be able to provide itself with enough oxygen to survive.
“No one thinks you won’t have a child when you become pregnant,” Lindsay said. “In an instant, that thought was all gone — no normal pregnancy or delivery.
“We come from a Christian family — there was a lot of praying,” she added.

Hydrocele and Hernia
A hernia is similar to a hydrocele except that abdominal contents in addition to fluid make the scrotum and/or groin appear swollen. Girls can also develop hernias that appear as a bulge or swelling in the groin or labia. In girls, this swelling may result from either a piece of the intestine or, less commonly, a fallopian tube or ovary in the hernia bulge or ‘sac’.[1] * Communicating hydrocele -- This is a hydrocele that has contact (or communication) with the fluids of the abdominal cavity. A communicating hydrocele is caused by the failure of the processus vaginalis (the thin membrane that extends through the inguinal canal and descends into the scrotum) to close completely during prenatal development. If this membrane remains open, there is a potential for both a hernia and a hydrocele to develop. A non-communicating hydrocele usually does not need to be surgically repaired, since it usually goes away spontaneously within six to 12 months. A communicating hydrocele needs to be surgically repaired to prevent further complications.
