Searsport man escapes injury after car catches fire

SEARSPORT, Maine — A 72-year-old man and his dog both escaped injury Wednesday afternoon when his car caught fire on Route 1.

Ellery Fairbrother of Searsport had been driving toward Searsport just before 2 p.m. when he realized that his 1995 Ford Contour was not running properly.

He noticed smoke that was not coming from his exhaust and pulled over to the side of the road, according to Searsport Police Chief Richard LaHaye.

The fire began to catch even more, and after making sure his dog was safely out of the car, Fairbrother called 911.

The Searsport Fire Department initially tried to put the fire out with extinguishers, but eventually needed to douse it with water.

“The vehicle was totaled,” LaHaye said, adding that no one was hurt while trying to put the fire out.

He speculated that it might have been a combination electrical and gasoline fire.

Members of the Searsport Police Department and Searsport Ambulance also assisted. Traffic on Route 1 was not stopped for any length of time, LaHaye said.
