Light therapy used to lessen pain

St. Mary's Healthcare Center recently bought an Anodyne Therapy System to add to its arsenal of tools in helping patients fight pain and recover from injuries.

The treatment consists of four pads with LED lights that rest on the body, said Tim Sorrells, director of rehabilitation services at St. Mary's.

"It's another adjunct to the therapy that we already have," Sorrells said.

Sorrells was curious about the Anodyne system, and rested it for a few minutes on his sore arm. That limb gets lots of workouts from helping his son in Little League baseball, he said.

"I put it on my elbow to see how it would do," he said.

Sorrells felt a slight warmth from the pad, and the pain diminished, he said.

"Even today, it feels a whole lot better," he said.

St. Mary's uses several machines that send sound waves or very low-voltage electricity through a body to help stimulate circulation as a part of physical therapy, he said.

But this is the first machine that uses light, and it's able to relax muscle tissue deeper than other options, he said.

"If it takes off like I expect it to, we're going to have to get another (system) soon," Sorrells said.

The Anodyne system is something that Dr. Angela McSwain, an out-patient neurologist for St. Mary's, believes will garner more and more attention as doctors and patients learn about it.

"I think that the more physicians know about it, the more they would prescribe it," McSwain said.

McSwain works with patients who have chronic pain due to damaged nerves, like people who can't use their legs well because of complications from diabetes.

Diabetics suffer from nerve damage in their extremities, and the Anodyne system helps increase the circulation in those body parts, she said.

Unlike medication, the light therapy has no side effects, which makes it a great tool, McSwain said.

She asked St. Mary's to consider buying an Anodyne system unit after starting her practice in Athens in October, she said.

She's seen patients feel less pain, improve their balance and have more feeling in their legs after the treatments, she said.

"With this therapy, I'm able to address the underlying problem," McSwain said.

I have some acne that I really makes me aware. Nothing I tried really works, but I’ve heard that light therapy and try to do. There are treatments at home, but they are so expensive and I was just trying to make sure that I want to use this form of treatment. There is a beach tan baja club near my house that has a machine LEDs. I read the reviews I’m not interested in how well it works. I can find on my own because it is different for all skin types. I wonder if anyone in a tanning bed, used as he was at the meeting.
