Dutton brings to light competition of national science fair

Author Judy Dutton has taken a seemingly dull subject of science fairs and opened the window of reality by sharing with the reader a fascinating look at what it takes to prepare for — and win — the prestigious Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in her book “Science Fair Season.”

This Super Bowl of science fairs has tested the minds and hearts of many talented students, and Dutton followed 12 throughout their personal journeys to success and/or failure. These high school students, along with 1,500 others, were trying to earn part of the $4 million in cash and scholarships offered by Intel, and Dutton has done a masterful job of sharing their individual stories of preparation and participation in an interesting way.

Some of the interesting characters in the author's work include:

- A young man obsessed with learning about and harnessing radioactivity who, with the help of a long-distance mentor, scavenged parts from all across the country to build his own personal reactor. He was finally able to do what no one his age had ever done: create a fusion reactor and become part of the nuclear fusion club. His efforts were enough to get him invited to the Intel Fair for a chance at winning some of the prizes offered.

- There is the young woman whose "skin irritation" turned into a full-blown case of the dreaded leprosy. Undaunted by the affliction, she determined to use her experiences as a platform for helping others with the same problem overcome the stigma of the dreaded "Bible disease." Her efforts eventually resulted in an invitation to attend the national science fair.

- And finally, a girl from Parkersburg, W.Va., who took on DuPont Corporation and found she was the object of an FBI terrorist investigation. The studies she made in the area of water purity eventually convinced DuPont and the Federal Government to improve the water purification policies for the town and opened the door for the young woman's entrance into the Intel Science Fair.

These three, along with nine others, comprise a well-told story of the struggles, pains, and joys of the science fair world. Each participant has a unique adventure and Dutton captures the essence of the individual experience with great compassion and excitement.

Dutton's book is not just for those interested in science: it is a great story of young people who do not give up until they have accomplished all they really want to do. "Science Fair Season" is a delightful and uplifting book and will be a great read for all who venture to its pages.
