Book shares world of animal intelligence

To the Editor:

"Alex & Me" is a brand-new Fairfield County District Library book. It is in large print, making for easy reading.

On Sept. 6, 2007, an African Gray parrot prematurely died at the age of 30.

His last words to his owner, Irene Pepperberg, were "You be good. I love you."

When Irene and Alex first met, birds were not believed to possess the potential for anything remotely comparable to human intelligence. Yet when he died, Alex could add, sound out words and understand concepts, proving animals capable of thought and intention.

The fame that resulted was extraordinary. But the public learned only some of the scientific story while Alex was alive. Now the full story of Irene and Alex's relationship reveals a deep human-animal bond, and an extraordinary scientific achievement. Alex's brain was the size of a walnut. Alex was not stupid or a flighty thoughtless bird-brain parrot.

The Fairfield County District Library is seeking a part time (20 hours per week) Library Assistant VI in the Adult Services department.

The Library Assistant will work as part of a team to provide the highest quality of public library service by providing excellent customer service, including: Answering basic directional questions Assisting reference librarians in answering more complex reference inquiries Helping customers locate materials in the library Helping to maintain orderly collections of materials in a variety of formats Assisting customers with library equipment such as copiers, the online catalog, microform equipment and PCs Providing training to customers and staff on the basics of PCs, PAC use and eBook use Providing reader's advisory service and Answering and directing phone inquiries.

Position requires a BS degree or higher. Experience in school or public library setting preferred. Excellent skills in computer applications, particularly with Microsoft Office products, are required. This is a Bargaining Unit position with hourly pay of $14.48 per hour.
