England v Sri Lanka: Alastair Cook determined to prove his doubters wrong and ...
It is that determination Andy Flower and the selectors are banking on to justify their judgment in returning him as captain of a side for whom he last played 15 months ago.
Ultimately, they see him as Andrew Strauss’s successor as Test captain and the 50-over job is a way of giving him some much-needed experience. And yet it remains a moot point whether he would have even made the squad had Kevin Pietersen stayed in the opener’s role which, despite his double hernia, he made a reasonable success of in the World Cup.
With Pietersen back at four, Cook needs to make a decent fist of his promotion for those two formats to be unified, eventually, under one man. Until that day arrives, the unwieldy system of three captains – with Stuart Broad having the T20 players’ ears just three days ago – will persist.
“I just see myself as a one-day captain,” said Cook. “I’m only concentrating on this series. Having three captains is certainly new and we will see how it works over the next 12 months.
“At the moment we have two inexperienced leaders trying to learn off Straussy. We are very separate in what we do but it does give me the huge honour of trying to lead this one-day side forward.”
He also holds up Strauss as an example of an opening batsman able to improve his strike rate to an acceptable level for the modern game, something Cook claims to have done playing for Essex when out of England’s one-day side.
“Strauss is a great example for me,” said Cook. “When he first started playing one-day cricket his strike-rate was around 65, maybe 70, but at the end he was up to 80.
“You can evolve as a player and definitely improve and he certainly did that.”
While it is true that Cook has improved his one-day batting for Essex, the gain was strictly relative, at least in the Clydesdale Bank 40-over matches he played last season and at the beginning of this one.
With an international strike rate of 71.3, which is too low for an opener afforded the opportunities of batting during the main powerplay, his rise to 76.7 with Essex is not much more than a notch in the right direction given the less exacting nature of the bowling.
If England are to exploit the powerplays as effectively as other teams, it really needs to be between 85-90, and that is a bigger leap than the one made by Chairman Mao.
