Covington man wins national gold medal in bowling in Senior Olympics

Bethley earned a spot in the National Games by winning his local and state tournaments. He compiled a score of 722 on games of 254-276-192 in the final round to win the championship and bring the first gold medal to the state of Louisiana in bowling competition. The top eight competitors from the first two days of qualifying advanced to the medal round on Saturday afternoon.

The participants had a practice session on June 16 followed by two rounds of qualifying on the June 17 and 18.At the end of qualifying, the top eight bowlers in each age division of the medal round for the three additional sets of competition.

Bowlers from all 50 states to competition and those who won gold, silver or bronze in the individual final state which took place in 2010, were eligible to compete in the 2011 National Games. The National Games are every two years.

"This was my first time competing at national level. I also qualified for the 2009 Games in San Francisco, but was unable to attend. I decided Houston was as close as the games would ever be to me, so this was going to be my one chance; win, lose, or draw,” Bethley said.

“It’s a pretty expensive venture, as the state does not provide any assistance with entry fees or travel expense. I’m just very fortunate that everything came together when it had to in the finals. I probably practiced 70-80 games on different lane conditions the week before going to Houston,” said Bethley.

“It was quite an honor to represent Louisiana and bring back the gold medal. I had so much support from my friends and other bowlers, especially in Baton Rouge where my pro shop is located.

“In fact, my buddies at Eagle 98.1 in Baton Rouge were giving daily updates on the tournament during their radio show.

“The level of competition met my expectations and made the practice worth every shot I threw.
