Duct tape fans will "stick together" during Avon festival
Veteran’s Memorial Park is the site of the eighth annual Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival, which kicks off June 17 and will run through June 19.The three-day event celebrates duct tape’s many uses and the enthusiasts who love using the household repair tool.
A parade, grand marshaled by reigning Miss America Teresa Scanlan, will kick off Saturday morning at 10 a.m., beginning at Avon High School. Special floats and sculptures will be made out of, of course, duct tape.
Scanlan, from Nebraska, will share her duct tape crafting stories during a meet and greet at 1:30 p.m. Saturday on the main stage at Veteran’s Memorial Park.
Mayor Jim Smith said that the festival interests many people from around the country and it is a good advertisement for the community. Avon, the “duct tape capital of the world,” is the perfect site for the festival as it is the home of ShurTech Brands, who owns the Duck Tape brand.
Patti Sack, assistant communications manager at ShurTech, said the company is glad to pull the community together.
“It’s so colorful to see what the community does with duct tape, the floats wow me,” she said.
Sack said that the parade will feature more than 20 floats, three of which will be sponsored by ShurTech.
The weekend will feature musical acts like “Mr. Speed,” a KISS cover band, magic shows and even dueling pianos.
Sack said that festival organizers are expecting more than 40,000 to attend. The Father’s Day weekend event’s theme is “Real Fans Stick Together,” as attendants will be able to celebrate their love of sports with Duck brand’s latest duct tape that features the logos, mascots and colors of favorite college teams.
A 300-pound Duck Tape elephant that was created for the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo will anchor the parade, asking people to return for next year’s safari-themed festival.
The festival runs 4-11 p.m. on June 17, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on June 18 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 19. The first 500 people through the gate each day will receive a free roll of duct tape.
