Annual Gig Harbor Wine and Food Festival to Take Place Aug. 6
— The second annual Gig Harbor Wine and Food Festival, scheduled for Aug. 6 at the Harbor History Museum, will be even better than last year’s inaugural event, according to organizers.As before, the festival is a joint fundraising effort for the museum and the Historic Waterfront Association.
According to organizer Al Abbott, festival-goers will enjoy an afternoon of sampling wines from more than 40 wine and food vendors including West Coast vineyards and local wine sellers, beer from Gig Harbor’s own 7 Seas Brewery and Silverdale’s Silver City Brewery and food from local restaurants.
In addition, there will be wine-related seminars throughout the day, raffle prizes and a live auction.
Diana Beck of The Wine Studio will speak about sparkling wines —“bubbles” as she calls them — and good wines priced at under $15. “In class about ‘bubbles’ I want to clear up the confusion many people have between champagne and sparkling wines. I’ll bring a nice Italian sparkling rosé, and a white Spanish cava,” Beck said. She’ll also have what she calls “a surprise. I think wine is a fun thing, and I have fun sharing it and talking to people about it,” she said.
Morso’s Steve Lynn and Emily Hewiston will talk about wine cocktails and the proper way to taste wine. Lynn will also lead guests in a game of “Wine Jeopardy.”
Kris Blondin of Tacoma’s STINK cheese shop will discuss wine and cheese parings.
Sheila Nicholas, owner of Anam Cara Cellars in Oregon will talk about pinot wines.
A workshop on how to fillet a salmon, by a chef from Anthony’s Restaurant, is sure to draw interest, Abbott said.
The highlight of the day will be a cook-off between guest chef Kevin Gillespie, executive chef at Woodfire Grill in Atlanta, Ga., and Thad Lyman of Gig Harbor’s Brix 21.
Gillespie was recently voted a Fan Favorite on Bravo’s “Top Chef” program.
“We’ve already told them that our protein will be pork,” said museum Executive Director Jennifer Kilmer. “So both Kevin and Thad have given us their shopping lists of the things they’ll want to include in their cook-off menus.”
One of the first things to be auctioned during the day will be the sous chef positions and a judge position, Kilmer said. “Of course the judge gets to taste all that luscious food the two chefs are creating.”
Other auction items include a tour and lunch at Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Napa, Calif. and other wine tours.

Given Oregon is so famous for Pinot Noir, you’re going to taste a lot of that, but there are whites and rose’s thrown in at most places.
A fantastic lunch was all part of the package too. Nick’s Italian Cafe in McMinnville served the best mussels I’ve ever had and some stonkingly fresh and crispy pizzas as well!
I think we’d settled on 5-6 wineries for the day, but Mike was keen to cram as much as he could for us – hence the lucky 7
My favourite was de Lancellotti because there was a no nonsense tasting room and the wine spoke for itself. I love the fancy places with the amazing views, but some were charging a whopping $20 for a tasting which we all thought was a bit too steep!
If you’re ever down in the Portland area and fancy a educational day being ferried around by Mike, we’d thoroughly recommend him as a very knowledgeable and lovely guy!
