SAGINAW — The surface of the brownish water ripples with thousands of tadpoles underneath.
Neighbors hear the frogs at night, and they’ve seen a great blue heron peering over the edge of the water.
But this habitat isn’t a pond. It’s a forgotten swimming pool in Thomas Township.
SN: This might be an extreme example, but it illlustrates clearly the hazard backyard pools can become when neglected.
At any given time, Saginaw County has more than 100 abandoned, unsanitary or unmaintained swimming pools, according to records kept by the Saginaw County Mosquito Abatement Commission and the Saginaw County Department of Public Health. Right now the count is 106.
SN: And the summer isn’t over yet. Some homeowners might have started out the year keeping up their pools only to have them fall victim to neglect.
Pools take money and time to maintain. People need to think carefully before getting one. Those who have one and are struggling to care for it need to think seriously about keeping it.
The defunct pools are an eyesore, a nuisance to neighbors, a drain on property values and a burden to taxpayers.
Over the course of one summer, a single pool could produce more than a million mosquitoes, each with the potential of carrying West Nile virus, St. Louis encephalitis and eastern equine encephalitis, said Randy Knepper, director of the Saginaw County Mosquito Abatement Commission.
SN: Just the thought of all the mosquitoes breeding in neglected pools — in addition to standing water in other locations around the county — has us starting to feel itchy.
The Mosquito Abatement Commission works with the Environmental Health Division of the county Health Department to document and monitor these pools in the hopes the homeowner will fix the problem.
“Everyone has a story on why their pool is the way it is,” said Bryant Wilke, director of the Environmental Health Services Division for the Health Department.
Many people simply can’t afford the maintenance a pool requires. Some stop caring for their pools after their children leave the house. Others are too old to bear the physical work required.
SN: We sympathize with folks who, for whatever reason, have found the upkeep to be too much. But they still bear the responsibility, not to mention the liability, for their swimming pools.
