Dancing to the beat: Zumba, other dances help more keep in shape
Tips for pursuing a workout routineThese tips come from fitness expert Becke Grundman at Prairie Life Fitness:
* Try to find things you enjoy: That's going to increase the likelihood you'll continue to do it.
* Get help: Going to classes is a good way to start a fitness routine. Whether that's going to Zumba or other classes, the instructor can help you do the workout so you don't feel lost.
* Set goals for yourself: Make them smaller or larger as you go on. You can change them, but it's important to have something to keep you accountable.
Kim Martin reached her breaking point when she realized she couldn't even sit on the sofa with her youngest daughter.
She always had struggled with her weight, which always had fluctuated, and having three children hadn't stabilized it. But she knew it was time for a change, she said.
"At my heaviest, I was probably very unhappy, even though people can't necessarily tell," Martin, of Lincoln, said. "But if you really look at my eyes in the pictures, you can tell the unhappiness, if somebody's been in that same place."
Over three years, Martin lost more than 100 pounds, and as she pursued a healthier lifestyle, she discovered Zumba, the fast-paced dance workout that's growing in popularity around the world. Her love of Zumba, and of helping people get healthy, led her to quit her job, become a Zumba instructor and open Total Body Infusion, her fitness studio at Seventh and Van Dorn streets.
There she gets to guide people daily through the battle for a healthier lifestyle. That includes people like Prisca Moreira, who has been doing Zumba since the studio opened in December. Moreira has lost several pounds and 9 inches so far.
"It's just been a helpful tool for me. There were different things that I couldn't do," Moreira said. "Now I can tie my shoe correctly, put my sock on without struggling. ... I finally found something I can say I love."
Moreira and Martin are part of a trend that's increasing around Lincoln and the country -- turning to dance classes as a way to get fit, with Zumba as the most popular example. Zumba has been adapted into six styles, from ZumbAtomic for children to Zumba Gold for active adults/seniors. Everything can be modified, and people of all ages and sizes attend classes. In addition to the accessibility of Zumba, the fun music and energetic programming draw people in.
